Media Library
PROBUSINESSWHITE-LABELThe Media Library keeps every image you have uploaded in one place, so you can reuse a picture instead of uploading it again. Open it from Media Library in the menu on the left.
How images get in
12- Pick one or several images from your computer.
- Or drag images here. A click opens the file picker too.
There are three ways:
- Upload images on the library page picks one or several images from your computer.
- Drag images onto the dashed box under the buttons. A click on that box opens the file picker too.
- Every image you upload elsewhere is added by itself: featured images, pictures in the text, the default social share image and the logo in Frame Studio.
After an upload, a line next to the buttons says how many images were added. An image that was refused is named with the reason, for example because it is larger than 2 MB or is not a JPG, PNG or WEBP file. The other images are still added.
Tip: The Upload button and the drop box are part of DonkeyCMS 1.03. If you do not see them, update your blog first: see Updates.
Sync from disk adds images that are already in your blog's uploads folder but missing from the library, for example ones copied there with FTP. Running it twice adds nothing twice.
Find an image
Type part of the file name into the search box. Each page shows up to 40 images; use Next and Prev for more.
Image details and alt text
Click an image to open Image Details: its size in pixels and in kilobytes, when it was uploaded and by whom, and Used in, the list of places it appears.
Type a short description into Alt text and save it. That text is filled in whenever you insert the image into a post from the library, so you only write it once.
Crop an image
1234- Pick the shape. The frame changes with it.
- The part inside the dashed frame is kept. Drag the picture and zoom to choose it.
- A picture that is in use cannot be replaced, and the tool says where it is used.
- Save as new adds the crop as another picture. Replace puts it in this picture's place.
Open an image and press Crop in Image Details. The focal-point cropping tool opens:
- Pick a shape: Social share (1200 × 630, the shape of a featured image), Wide (16 : 9), Photo (4 : 3), Square (1 : 1) or Portrait (3 : 4).
- Drag the picture and use the slider to zoom, until the dashed frame holds the part you want.
- Press Save as new to add the crop to the library as another picture. It gets the first picture's name with "-cropped" and its alt text, and the picture you opened stays as it is. Or press Replace to put the crop in the picture's place.
A picture that is in use is never replaced. The tool says where it is used and offers only Save as new, so a published post never changes by surprise.
When you replace a picture while Keep originals is on (see below), the uncropped picture is kept and can be restored. With it off, DonkeyCMS asks first, because the uncropped picture would be gone for good.
To crop several pictures, tick them and press Crop selected. The tool goes through them one after another and shows where you are, for example "2 of 5". Skip leaves a picture alone; Cancel stops, and the crops already made stay.
Tip: Cropping in the Media Library is part of DonkeyCMS 1.07. If you do not see the Crop button, update your blog first: see Updates.
Image Optimizer Plus
123- On: the untouched file of each optimized picture is kept, and can be restored.
- The quality of the lighter pictures. 80 suits most blogs.
- Converts every older JPG and PNG in one go. The number says how many wait.
Under the pictures, Image Optimizer Plus tidies up a whole library at once. It is shown to people who may change Settings, and it needs the Image Optimizer switched on: see Images.
- Optimize all turns every picture that is still a JPG or PNG into a lighter WebP, at the Quality you choose. The number on the button says how many pictures wait, and while some do, a line beside Sync from disk says so too. A backup is made first. Posts that use those pictures are updated by themselves, and a picture's old address still opens the new file.
- Keep originals stores the untouched file of every optimized picture in a locked folder that no visitor can reach. Kept originals are not part of backups.
- A few pictures are left alone, and Left alone lists each with its reason: for example a picture used in your site's header or footer, the default social share image, or one that would not get any smaller.
The bar above the pictures shows how much space the Library and the Kept originals take. Show originals lists the kept files: Download one, Restore it, or delete originals you no longer need to free the space.
Warning: Restore puts the original file back at its full size, and the hidden location and camera details it was taken with come back too. Optimize all leaves a restored picture alone from then on.
Tip: Image Optimizer Plus in the Media Library is part of DonkeyCMS 1.07.
Delete images safely
In Image Details, press Delete. An image that is still in use cannot be deleted: DonkeyCMS tells you exactly where it is used (for example the featured image of a post, the text of another, or your site header), so a published post never loses a picture by accident.
To delete several images, tick them, or Select all, and press Delete selected. If any of them is still in use, nothing is deleted and you see which ones block it.
Warning: Deleting is permanent. Make a backup first if you are tidying up many images: Settings, Backup, Back up now.
